Peterson went on to record several duo albums with trumpeters Harry "Sweets" Edison, Roy Eldridge and others. With bassists Ray Brown and Major Holley, the recordings were Peterson's first in the U.S., and they still sound reasonably fresh after seventy years. Many years later, the Verve label re-released a number of Oscar Peterson duo albums in a three-disc set Debut: The Clef/Mercury Duo Recordings 1949-1951 (2009).

Through Bruce Raeburn, Curator Emeritus at Hogan Archive of New Orleans Music and New Orleans Jazz, I learned that cornetist Joe King Oliver and pianist Jelly Roll Morton recorded duo versions of Morton's "Tom Cat Blues" and "King Porter Stomp" in 1924. Duo breakouts existed within the performances early on, but duo recordings were a rarity. Swing ensembles then dominated through the 1930s up to the bebop movement.

The New Orleans bands were supplanted by the "hot" quintets, sextets, and septets. In all likelihood, there wasn't much history to report. There was no recording of the event, and like the beginnings of instrumental jazz duos, the history is murky. The orchestra was silenced, and Confrey and a second unknown pianist launched into one of the first extended duo performances. Confrey physically arranged the orchestra on the periphery of the center stage, where two grand pianos were placed. In 1921 a prodigy pianist named Zez Confrey brought his classical training and sophisticated pallet into the fray as a pioneer of the jazz duo artform. The piano was meant to be the glue holding the shrill and boisterous elements together. Converted dance orchestras often sounded like unbalanced acoustic junkyards a single violin, cornet, trombone, clarinet, tuba, drums, banjo, and piano, all fighting for attention. Hence this album, produced by Manfred Eicher at New York’s Avatar Studios in October 2015, which captures the improvisational magic of the duo, the expressive individuality of the participants and the ways in which they can – as Wadada Leo Smith says – “merge as a single wave, or a single voice. The early days of jazz were not always harmonious. We have continued this approach in recent years…” A particularly inspiring collaboration at New York’s The Stone early in 2015 underlined the affinity of their sounds and concepts and made the documentation of the duo a priority. In the process, a space of possibility emerged that introduced me to other systems of music-making. In quartet performances, Wadada and I often became a unit within the unit generating spontaneous duo episodes as formal links. As he recalls in the liner notes here, “That group’s broad palette included ‘pure’ tones and distorted sound, motion and stillness, melody and noise.
